History

Michigan was part of a territory called the Territory of Michigan. The territory became part of the United States on June 30, 1805. Later Michigan became a state on January 26, 1837. It became a state because the Erie Canal opened and settlers started moving to Michigan. The population grew and it became the 26th state of America. The first people to settle in Michigan were Native American tribes. Some of their names were the Kickapoo, Miami, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Menominee, and the Fox and Sauk.
